This was a Zoom tasting where all participants were asked to but and taste their own choice of English wines, mainly still ones, and these are the summary comments from the tasters…
The whites:
- 2013 Camel Valley Bacchus – has matured beautifully, more depth, bit less fragrance; excellent Denbies Surrey Gold – fruity, peaches, very refreshing, good with white meat
- 2020 Denbies Litmus Orange Bacchus – delicious, apricots, light, bit expensive
- 2019 Chapel Down Flint Dry – fresh, fruity
- Waitrose Blueprint English White – pale yellow, hints of lime and grapefruit, surprisingly good
- Simpsons Chardonnay – pale yellow, hints of grapefruit, light nose
- 2020 Chapel Down Bacchus – clean, dry, floral notes, hint of pepper, good
- Marlings A Polite White – crisp, nicely dry, fruity, will buy again
The rosés:
- Furleigh Sea Pink Pinot Noir – revelation, dark rose, vibrant fruit, getting more in
- 2019 Chapel Down Rose – very much liked
- Bolney Estate Foxhole Rose – easy summer wine, will buy again
- Gifford’s Hall Rose – pale, floral/liquorice/strawberry nose, honey, plums, strawberry on palate
The reds:
- 2016 Gusbourne Pinot Noir – dark red, some good depth and minerality, touch of oak – impressive
- Denbies Redlands Red – deep red, fruity, hints of strawberry, raspberry, good acidity
- 2018 Bolney Estate Dark Harvest – hint of blackcurranr, bit thin, improved with time
- Bolney Estate Pinot Noir – pleasant, fruity, bit light
- Setley Oaked Red – tannins too high, not liked
Sparkling:
- NV Furleigh Reserve – biscuit, fine mousse, light flavour, pleasant
- NV Nyetimber Classic Cuvee – easy drinking sparkler
