Tasting Notes: “A Sicilian Wine Journey”, presented by Carlo Capalbo, 8 December 2021

The whites:

  1. Ciello Bianco Terre Siciliano – Caves de Pyrene £8.65 (gentle opening aperitif)
  2. Marco de Bartoli Grillo Vigna Verde – Caves de Pyrene £18.65 (Very pleasant, big cut above supermarket Grillo)
  3. Marco de Bartoli Integer Zibibbo Secco – Vinissimus £28.61 (grown on Pantellaria, with the vines planted in holes to protect them from the wind; dry rather than the better-known sweet Pantellaria wines)
  4. Tenuta dell Terre Nere Etna Bianco – Vincognito £17.95 (A field blend including 60% Cariccante which is only grown in the Etna area, absolutely superb quality wine with a touch of oak)

The reds:

  1. COS Frappato – Solent Cellar £24.00 (light, fresh, ripe cherries, made to drink young)
  2. Ariann Occhipinti SP68 Rosso – Caves de Pyrene £23.40 (70% Frappatto, 30% Nero D’Avola – had significant bottle stink, brassicas)
  3. Girolamo Russo ‘a Rina – Wanderlust Wines £28.00, Vinissimus £25.90 (Grown on the northern slopes of Etna, mainly Nerello Mascalese)

And to finish:

  1. Donnafugata Ben Ryé – widely available ca. £45 (made with sun-dried Zibibbo, a.k.a. Muscat of Alexandria, pricey for what it is)
