2018 Goutte d’Argent Sauvignon Blanc , Vina Marty, DO Valle de Leyda (Latin Wines Online, £17.99)

Yellow with a tinge of green, a subtle Loire-like SB with strong minerality, fermented with Sake yeast and aged on the lees, a coastal influence due to proximity of the Pacific. A very good and elegant wine, not typical of cheaper New World offerings.

2021 Talinay Chgardonnay, Vina Tabali DO Valle de Limari (Vincognito £18.95)

Made as a cool-climate Chardonnay, an incredibly citrussy zingy lively white, about as far from the French style as one could imagine. A delightful and refreshing wine, in many ways more like a Riesling to me.

2019 Signos de Origen La Vinilla, Vinedos Emiliana, DO Valle de Casablanca (Noble Green £16)

A big and rich white, 76% Chardonnay with the balance Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier, so quite Rhone-like, balanced by good minerality. Vineyard nearer the sea than most Chilean estates.

2019 Morande One to One Old Vine Pais, Vina Morande, DO Secano Interior, Maule (Majestic £7.99)

Mid-red, 15% Cinsault, from old Pais vines, a real lively light red, much more fun and flavour than your average Beaujolais, from low-yielding bush vines, vinified with carbonic maceration to preserve the lovely freshness, all cherries and red fruit on nose and palate. Best slightly chilled, terrific value summer red. Pais has evolved from grapes brought by the Conquistadors!

2020 Marea Syrah, Luis Felipe Edwards, DO Valle de Leyda (£15.99, Majestic)

Deep red typical good-quality New World Shiraz style. Spicy and a touch peppery on the nose and palate, rich with excellent acidity. A very good commercial wine, not a lot of local character but none the worse for that. Textbook Syrah.

2018 Cerro Basalto Garnatxa, Vina Koyle, DO Alto Colchagua/Colchagua Andes (Wine Society, £14.95)

Vegan and biodynamic , savoury-sweet on nose and palate, with lovely smooth tannins, a sweet-sour and very long finish, very unusual to find an unblended New World Grenache. A very lovely wine, very good value.

2020 Licanten Malbec, Vina La Ronciere. DO Licanten, Valle de Curico ( Corney and Barrow, £13.50)

Almost black, a very inky colour, slightly savoury black fruit on the nose with big mouthfill and high acidity on the palate. Some real structure and character, so different to the anodyne “pub” Malbecs at the lower end of Argentina’s offerings. One to really get to understand Malbec.

2016 Vina Maquis Lien, Vina Maquis, DO Colchagua (Oddbins £24)

A lovely complex blend, 41% Carmenere, 28% Cabernet Franc, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Syrah. Beautiful savoury red and black fruit, slight bitterness (tarmac?), phenolics and smokiness, smooth from the Carmenere but with a clear element of Cabernet Franc in behind, a very long finish. Aged 18 months in second-use French Oak. A beautiful wine showing what Chile can do with blends.
