From a very new vineyard, deep pink with a very odd nose and very acidic \u2013 much more like an off-dry cider, not at all pleasant for me \u2013 not sure what the winemaker was trying to achieve here and crazy expensive at \u00a328. Not liked by most.<\/p>\n
Very fresh on nose and palate, bone dry and with an underlying richness and tangy elements of green fruit to balance. A very pleasant wine from an ex-McLaren FI winemaker. Reasonable value at \u00a316.95<\/p>\n
A classy take on Bacchus, quite dry with notable acidity, fragrant on the nose with a more complex palate due to oak ageing (5 months in old Burgundy barrels). A characteristic touch of flinty mineral although grapes grown on clay. Not quite a Loire Fume Blanc but heading the right direction, sadly not cheap at \u00a323.<\/p>\n
Billed as an orange wine but made with a very light touch, made at Denbies in Surrey. Some colour and good depth on the palate, this was from a cool vintage with relatively short skin contact followed by 9 months in old French oak. A very well-made wine showing the serious qualities of Bacchus. If you can get it, reasonable value at \u00a318.50.<\/p>\n
A weird wine, this! Bright cloudy orange (wine AND label!), made biodynamically with wild yeast and unfiltered, this spent at least 30 days on the skins, why they use Albarino for this I\u2019m not sure as no sign of the grape characteristics could be detected. Very acidic, a very rustic and rather unpleasant yeasty nose and not really fruity either. For me, barely drinkable, what are they trying to achieve here? Too much \u201corange\u201d for sure, and a silly price at \u00a325.<\/p>\n
Made by Daniel Ham, late of Langhams and maker of superb sparkling whilst there, this is his biodynamic and low-intervention take on innovative wine-making. So, no sulphur, no filtration, wild yeasts etc. Overcoming the rather sour yeasty nose, not sure if this was a dark rose or a light red. I thought it was an \u201chonest\u201d wine but no real character and the cloudiness does seem to get in the way \u2013 can one take \u201cnatural\u201d too far? Expensive of course due to tiny volumes (\u00a328)<\/p>\n
A more traditional style, filtered this time, with a pleasant fruity Pinot Noir nose although some detected a rather strange \u201cbubble-gum\u201d note which was not liked. On the palate, typical fairly marked acidity and but nice simple fruitiness, suggested that it is best served chilled. At only 11.5% BV, the relative lack of really ripe fruit is evident, still PN in the UK needs really good ripening to justify the prices that have to be charged (\u00a321)<\/p>\n
Almost brown (both bottles), all I could taste and smell was oak, finished with an unpleasant bitter note. This wine was clearly faulty with some bottle variation \u2013 a pity, definitely not what the winemaker intended. The Diamond Fields vineyard has an excellent reputation for Burgundy-clone Pinot Noir so what the dickens happened here?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
