A somewhat shy but aromatic nose, but wonderful fresh and pure citrus impact on the palate, aged on the lees, grown at 5,000 feet, very alpine and German in style from this most Teutonic co-operative. Very much liked on the night.<\/p>\n
A richer white, stainless fermentation so no oak, slightly \u201cwaxy\u201d on the nose but sharp nuttiness and slight saltiness on the palate. An interesting foil to the Alto-Adige.<\/p>\n
Quite a deep golden colour, made from (mainly) pre-phylloxera vines in this very volcanic area. Aged on the lees for 10 months, with a slightly rustic, maybe hint of sulphur on the nose. On the palate, stewed white fruits, especially apricots, with a big rich mouthfeel, even a hint of smokiness. Super wine for those who like the richer style.<\/p>\n
100% Nerello Mascalese and very Sicilian in character, light red in colour and again slightly rustic on the nose, zingy cherries and redcurrants on the palate, very slightly petillant with a strong mineral backbone. A fun wine.<\/p>\n
Deep red in colour, this very rare grape is only grown very locally. Some big red and black fruit on the nose, slightly floral and lovely rich fruit and a slight smokiness on the palate. The grape is considered locally to make \u201cwines for celebrations\u201d such as weddings \u2013 for us a real discovery although I think very difficult to get hold of. A favourite on the night.<\/p>\n
Deep red with a slightly brown rim, and distinctly rustic on the nose, this is 15% Merlot, 85% Aglianico, aged 12 months in terrcotta pots, from some very old and tall vines. Big lack fruit on the palate, the tannins having moderated with age and now very smooth. Big stuff.<\/p>\n
Amazing value for this widely-available wine, red-violet colour from 50% Montepulciano, 50% Aglianico, slightly jammy and with a caramel touch on the plate of red and black fruits, worth ageing.<\/p>\n
Distinctly brownish on the rim, this is the current release from tis winery. Another grape we know very little about, this Sagrantino has a full and rich palate, a lick of oak and hints of liquorice and a whiff of smoke, classically beautiful with gorgeous smooth tannins, a top wine and very good value.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
