Very much liked on the night and something o f a revelation to those more used to the “heavier” style of this Galician trademark grape.

2023 Gaia Wines Wild Ferment Assyrtiko (£31.00)

From one of the major Greek producers, made with wild yeasts and fruit from dry ungrafted vines, this was beautiful, elegant and serious wine, rich but not heavy and able to age. 2023 saw a big drop in production due to the notorious heat wave, so really good value despite the price. Potentially a great wine.

2022 Ailala Ribeiro (£17.00)

From the Treixadura grape, the fruit was hand-harvested and spent 4 months on the lees to develop structure, some lovely fruit (apricots?) on the palate and probably the richest of this trio of whites.

2020 Edi Simcic Rebula (£?)

From Slovenia, a typical oxidised style, quite deep yellow and something of the amontillado about it. Interesting if a bit of a shock, developed rather well in the glass.

2021 Alpha Estate Hedgehog Xinomavro (£22.50)

This second Greek wine was produced in the Hedgehog vineyard at 700 metres by the cold maceration method, then spent 12 months in oak before bottling. Slightly rustic on the nose with cherries, raspberries and a touch of leather, Very light in colour despite 14% a.b.v., not a typical Xinomavro, quite acidic at first but grows in the glass. An unusual and very likeable wine

2022 Las Tres Filas Mencia( £14.29)

From the Mencia grape which has been gaining quite a following of late, grown on 80 year-old bush vines and aged in American oak., a very pleasant if unremarkable wine. Good value.

2020 Chateau Oumsiyat Merlot (£15.89)

From the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon, and vintage well before the Israelis started flattening the place yet again, this is grown at 1000 metres, using remontage during vinification. Had a definite vegetal nose and not my personal favourite.

2021 Pegoes Touriga Nacional (£14.99)

From this famous cooperative founded in 1958, the grapes underwent a long maceration in steel followed by several months in oak. A typical rich black berry fruit and deep and rich on the palate. Touches of chocolate and very long, a beautiful wine and superb value.

2022 Talo Primitivo (£16.29)

From Puglia, an Italian speciality alongside its alter ego Zinfandel grown in the USA. Strong blackberry aromas on the nose and first impression on the palate was sweetness despite this being a dry wine. Extremely palatable and easy–drinking, a very attractive and not too serious take on this much-travelled grape. Once more, very good value.

One of our occasional “commercial” tastings in support of local independent wine merchants, and a very eclectic one at that!
